Artist's Statement
Creating each piece and taking risks toward its completion presents a parallel to my own life's process. Just as each risk is taken toward completing a work of art, each risk in life brings me further along a personal journey. The journey creates new experiences, and the experiences create new forms. Quality is the objective.
How I Crafted My Path
Creating form from experience has always been important to me. I grew up in Denver, Colorado, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1978. After graduating, I followed my passion for art and travel to Florence, Italy, where I focused on studio work in painting and ceramics. I also spent seven years studying art history and painting conservation.

When I returned to the U.S. in 1987, I shifted my focus to working with clay. Clay demands a willingness to take risks and learn from mistakes. Mastering it means working with its natural characteristics, rather than trying to control them. The timing involved in shaping clay plays a crucial role in the final form, and over time, I’ve come to appreciate how this process reflects aspects of my own nature. My work is influenced by movement and balance, aiming to express a sense of calm and quiet strength through form.
